AlbumBookmarksDescriptionA bookmark from the National Library of New Zealand, Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa.Item readsSide A: Clifton Station, Hawkes Bay. RP Moore Collection. Alexander Turnbull Library.
Side B: This view of the sea from the verandah of a rambling Hawkwars Bay station homestead illustrates one of the peculiarities of the panoramic camera of the type used by the RP Moore Studio. The nature of the exposure (a camera rotating on a case over a period of up to 50 seconds) involved a measure of visual distortion. Generally, the near there subject matter was to the camera the greater the distortion. Hense in this image, the parts of the building on either side of the photograph are not wings at a right angle to the main body of the house, but actually each end of the same straight verandah.
This image was reproduced from one of more than 2,400 negatives originally from the Wellington studio of RP Moore. These and some 340 vintage prints are helped by the Alexander Turnball Library.
