The photographs in this album are a selection of those held in the Te Aute Archive Collection.About the albumIn 1854 Te Aute College Te Kura o Te Aute opened as the Ahuriri Native Industrial School and was later renamed Te Aute College) with 12 pupils, under the leadership of Samuel Williams. In 1857 the Te Aute Educational Trust was established with 4014 acres of Crown land and the gift of 4273 acres from Ngāi Te Whatuiāpiti.
James Graham in his D.Phil Education thesis on Te Aute notes “Te Aute College does hold a proud heritage of contributing to the development and growth of Maori communities and to New Zealand as a nation throughout its history. Te Aute College has produced a number of notable Maori leaders who have been at the forefront of their respective fields …” (James P. H. Graham Whakatangata Kia Kaha. DPhil, Massey University, 2009)
The School’s archival records are held on behalf of the Te Aute Trust Board in the Anglican Archives at the John Kinder Theological Library.
