Joseph Atkin was the son of William Atkin, of Kohimarama, Auckland.
He studied at St John's Theological College and became a missionary with the Melanesian Mission.
While on a trip to Nukapu Island, Santa Cruz, Atkin was there when Bishop Patteson died. Atkin died not too long after of injuries.
