The purpose of this thesis is to explore a Māori model of exegesis taking cues from other selected forms of Cultural exegesis and taking care to incorporate textual exegesis and commentary on issues relevant to the given text.

This method is not interested in finding an end product (ie. a conclusory interpretation). Rather its purpose is simply to engage and re-engage with the text through the filters of exegesis, commentary and cultural understanding. The biblical text chosen for this purpose is Exodus 19 because it holds suitable potential for comparison with correlating Māori concepts. This choice is arbitrary in that it selects a text that is a small pan of a wider narrative corpus, but it remains suitable for the task at hand,

The first chapter of this thesis is a survey of the history of biblical interpretation guided by the central premise that biblical interpretation has always been subjective, and therefore in no way precludes the legitimate development of cultural forms of exegesis. The subsequent chapters posit a Māori model of exegesis, taking cues from scholarly developments regarding Cultural Exegesis, and from two specific cultural models, being namely PaRDS and Divant.

Drawing from this research, a Māori model made up of three composite parts will be demonstrated in application. Using the metaphor of the human body, the three composite parts are delineated as: Te Mata -(the "face" of the text, focusing on exegesis of the written text: Te Ngakau (the "heart" of the test), focusing on commentary and relevant issues pertaining to the world' of the text and Te Ritenga-(the "resemblances" of the text), focusing on a comparison of concepts from within the given test and from within Maori culture.

Te Risenga looks at the use of mountain symbolism, and the theme of ascent (and descent) as concepts drawn from the text of Exodus 19 (and from additional ancient Near Eastern sources) and compares them with similar specific examples found within Māori cultural thought.Additional informationA thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Theology.
