He is also reputed to be the first Chinese-born person to gain Tongan citizenship, in a period when anti-Asian prejudice was at its height in Tonga’s near neighbours of Fiji, Australia and New Zealand.

This paper discusses briefly the background of the Anglican Church in Tonga where Sang Mark worked, and chronicles his contribution to the Church both in Tonga and the wider Polynesian context.
