Datec 1890'sDescriptionHead and shoulder portrait of George Sarawia. GEORGE Sarawia was born on Vanua Lava in the Banks Islands but spent so much of his life on Mota that he was called and called himself a Mota man. John Coleridge Patteson (not then Bishop) and Bishop G.A. Selwyn called at Vanua Lava in 1857 on the lst. "Southern Cross". George Sarawia was persuaded to come on board. The following year he was persuaded to stay on board and sail with them. Later he became the first Banks Islander to go to Kohimarama in Auckland, New Zealand. Patteson and Pritt learned the Mota language from him. In 1858 he was one of the 12 who made up the winter school at Lifu in the Loyalty islands. He was baptized in 1863. On December 20th, the Eve of S. Thomas Day, he was made deacon by Bishop Patteson. He continued teaching on Mota and gradually spread a Christian influence over every part of the Island's life. He was ordained priest in Auckland by Bishop Cowie on S.
