Queen Victoria School was founded in 1901 with the laying of the foundation stone by the Duke of Cornwall (later King George V) on Wednesday June 12, 1901. The School was finished and opened in May 1903, by Earl Ranfurly, Governor General of New Zealand.
Maori girls' education in Auckland was started by the Reverend G.A, Kissling at Kohimarama where fires destroyed the buildings. A new school, St Stephens, was opened in Parnell on the site of the current Parnell Primary School in St Stephen's Avenue, 15 December 1850. It is unclear at which date girls ceased to attend. In the 1890's Archdeacon B.T. Dudley led a decision to build a school for girls on the same property, which led to the building of Queen Victoria School for Maori Girls. It closed in 2001.
